The Archaeological Museum was inaugurated on April 13, 2002 on the basis of the materials of the first Archaeological Museum, opened on March 13, 1951. The exhibition is organized in three pavilions according to historical periods. The first hall begins with the showcase of prehistoric finds in the city and surrounding areas. In chronological order, the history of the city is continuously followed in the archaic, classical and civic Illyrian period up to the first century. Next, the topographical, economic, political and cultural development of the Roman Dyrrachium unfolds. In the thematic aspect, this city proves the presence of an autochthonous Illyrian population with a rich spiritual world. Durrës appears as a center with a multi-branch economy that traded with many Mediterranean centers. The medieval period spans 15 centuries, from c. V-XV and closes with the Turkish period.
