BERAT CASTLE

It is located at the highest point of the historical center and is one of the few monuments of the medieval period in Albania that continues today to have an intense life within its surrounding walls. Until the 13th century, the medieval city developed mainly within the territory of the castle, where, in addition to many monuments of a religious, defensive and engineering nature, there was also a considerable number of dwellings. Like the other two neighborhoods, the castle got its current architectural and urban appearance during the 18th-19th centuries. Like any other fortified settlement, the urban development was directly influenced by the form of the fortification and especially the entrances. The main road network of the neighborhood is conditioned to a large extent by the main northern entrance, from which branch three main roads that cross the neighborhood; the eastern and western roads follow the surrounding wall, while another goes in the center towards the acropolis area. From these three main arteries branch off a multitude of alleys, which with the characteristic meanderings of medieval urbanism, create a very interesting and functional circulation.
