HOUSE WITH LEAVES

Built in 1931, this house originally had the function of an obstetric clinic at the initiative of the prominent Albanian doctor Dr. Jani Basho (1892-1957) and directed by him. During the Second World War, under the German occupation, it belonged to the Gestapo. In the first years after the war, this house was used as an investigation center, as well as a place where torture was carried out, and it remained as such until 1948, when relations with the former Yugoslavia were broken. Starting from the fifties, the functions of the building changed. The headquarters of the technical-scientific branch of the State Security was located here, which mainly dealt with electronic interception, telephone control and postal control, as well as a branch which dealt with the pursuit of foreigners until the merger of the State Security in in 1991. The State Security (Secret Police) was used to suppress the population, to eliminate the various factions and groups within the communist party as well as the opposition outside it. It was used to keep the totalitarian regime afloat. For decades, legends have circulated about the “House with Leaves”, the fruit of the secret and mystery with which this house was wrapped. Today, with a project of the Ministry of Culture, it has turned into museum which will simultaneously reveal views of Albanian society under the conditions of a regime that aimed at total control over the bodies and souls of people.
