Of the medieval and well-known city of Vlora, today only the Muradia mosque is preserved in its center. During the XV-XVI centuries, Vlora was the most important residential center for the Ottoman Empire in Albania, thanks to the position of the port of Vlora on the Adriatic Sea. The Turks took it in 1417. During the XV-XVI centuries, the city was inhabited only by Christians and Jews. With the construction of the castle near the harbor by Sultan Suleimani in 1583, only 17 Muslims are mentioned, because the other part of the gamizon stood in the Kanina fortress. For the Ottomans, Vlora was important in the war operations of 1480 against Italy. Further, it was a base of Sultan Bayazit in the war against the Himarjot insurgents, while in 1537 Sultan Suleiman stayed there to supervise the construction works of the castle and built the mosque.
