PELLUMBASI CAVE

This is one of the most popular caves in Tirana. The journey from Tirana to the village of Pellumbasi takes about 45 minutes. Then you will walk about 2 km on the road that leads to the “Black Cave” or “Black Pigeon Cave”. The panorama along the way is amazing, the mountain stretching into the canyons of the Erzen River. To get there, follow the national road Tirana-Elbasan and in Ibë turn left to the village of Pellumbas. The road is good until Pellumbas village. Pellumbasi Cave, or Black Cave, is about an hour’s climb in the village of Pellumbasi, 27 km southeast of Tirana. The cave is 360 meters deep and 17 meters high, inside there are fantastic stalagmites and stalactites as well as bats. It is completely dark in the cave, as there is only one entrance. 40 thousand years ago the cave was the early home of bears. It was then used as a residence for people in the medieval period. During the world wars, the cave was a secret place and was used by the inhabitants for shelter. There are only five such caves in Europe, but the Pigeon Cave has traces of early settlements from the Paleolithic period to the Middle Ages. It was presented to the public for the first time by a study of Italian speleologists in collaboration with Albanian ones after the 90s (95-96). Then it became part of the outdoor climbing route of the HASH sports group, which was a mix of foreigners in our country with Albanian citizens. For many years it was frequented by this group which made this cave known to Tiranians and beyond. Today, all mountain guides operating in Tirana know this destination, which is also marked with orientation signs.
