SKANDERBEG SQUARE

“Skanderbeg” Square received its name on November 26, 1937. It was conceived in a circular shape with a circular fountain in the middle, while the dominating building was the old City Hall, which was demolished in 1980. This square was surrounded by traditional buildings.  Old Bazaar, Clock Tower, Et’hem Bey Mosque, Church of the Evangelization (which was demolished later), etc. Skanderbeg Square was reopened on June 10, 2017, after a major restoration. The square has turned into a giant pedestrian mall, the largest in the Balkans. The new elements of the square are: approximately 28,000 square meters are paved with tiles from all over Albania. The square paved with stone tiles has the shape of a shallow pyramid, where the highest point is located in the middle with a height of 1.80 meters. The idea of this is that: everyone can stand here and feel important. And all the stones that were taken from all Albanian lands symbolize the unity of all Albanians. The square has more than 100 cold water fountains to keep the place cool in the summer. Skanderbeg Square, the Opera and Ballet Theatre, the National Museum and the National Bank surround the stone-paved square, while trees from all over Albania have been planted behind these buildings. Small parks, benches, flowers, photo platforms and a wedding altar are all located in the square. 32 square meters are planted with various aromatic trees and 90,000 square meters is pedestrianized, while the underground parking lot has space for 300 cars.
